These different locks are the result of curiosity on bike locks, cost, weight and seeing if I could put together a better, cheaper, lock with individual components. For overnight lockup, the 'Trucker chain' lock is tough (only $20 a few years ago), but only available in 3 ft lengths. Still a handy length, although heavy. For a trip to the Mall, but not in Boston, I like the Kryptonite Keeper lock. For a trip to the local coffee shop or rural riding, I only need the light weight 1/8" cable lock to prevent a grab and run by a dumb teen. For long term storage, I use my basement. As a note on U-locks vs chain locks, riding in a rural area has fewer poles for locking, so a long chain or cable is better. If in a urban or town where there are steel posts, fences or bike racks, the U-lock is probably better for your main lock. Depending on the location, consider a secondary lock to increase the difficulty of theft.
