It is easy to tell the high water mark by the mangrove tree roots.
This time of the season is the lowest water level, until the rainy season starts again.

I paddle with a half paddle until I realize that I need the length to pole against the shore at times.
Also swapping hands when alternating the sides is too slow to be effective.
